The program is designed for applicants who are looking to process their applications for permanent residence in the Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC) i.e., based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

The FSTC program is for people who meet the below criteria:

  • are qualified in a skilled trade
  • may become permanent residents on the basis of their ability to become economically established in Canada
  • intend to reside in a province other than Quebec

Eligibility to apply for the Federal Skilled Trades Program

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is for people who are skilled workers and want to become permanent residence based on being qualified in a skilled trade.

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for FSTP, the candidate must:

  • meet the required language levels
    1. Speaking
    2. Reading
    3. Writing
    4. Listening
  • have at least 2 years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the 5 years before you apply
  • meet the job requirements for the skilled trade as set as in the NOC
  • have a valid job offer of full-time employment for a total period of at least 1 year or certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority

Skilled Work Experience

For the FSTP, skilled trades are organized under the NOC group that are for skill Type B.

As a candidate you must show you have performed the duties mentioned in the NOC, including all essential and main duties.

Education

There is no education requirement for the Canadian Experience Class.

However, if you want to improve your ranking, you can show (if you have):

  • a certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary institution (high school) or post-secondary institution
  • OR
  • If you have foreign education. You can get points for:
    1. a completed foreign credential,
    2. an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report showing that your education is equal to a completed certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary institution (high school) or post-secondary institution

Language Ability

To apply for FSTP you must:

  • meet the minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for speaking and listening, and Canadian Language Benchmark 4 for reading and writing
  • Take approved language tests for reading, writing, speaking and listening
  • Enter your test results in your Express Entry Profile

Your language tests are valid for 2 years after the date of the test result and they must be valid on the day you apply for permanent residence.

Proof of Funds

You must show you have enough funds for you and your family to settle in Canada.

You don’t need to show enough proof of funds if:

  • You are currently able to legally work in Canada, and
  • have a valid job offer from an employer in Canada

Admissibility

You must be admissible to Canada.

Documents Required

Following are the documents required for Federal Skills Trades Program:

  • Current passport and/or any travel document
  • You must meet the required language tests
  • You must have worked at least two out of five years in your trade
  • Your trade should be under the NOC list
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Financial Documents
  • Any other supporting documents
  • Though there is no educational requirement, you can improve your Express Entry ranking by providing a Canadian education or equivalent foreign credential
